Connecting with Kids through Questions of the Day

When it comes to connecting with my kids, I tend to get pretty creative.

I have to.  I travel for work so frequently that if we misalign- someone’s in a bad mood, or whatever I’ve planned isn’t as interesting as video games- it’s heartbreaking.

I started ‘Questions of the Day’ a few weeks ago, and it’s been a ton of fun on both sides.

Here’s how it works: Each of my kids has a sketchbook- they’re 4 and 7.  My 7-year-old is a great reader, an awesome artist and he’s working on his handwriting.  I write 14 or 15 questions with enough room between them that he can draw or write an answer.

The questions really run the gamut.  And having to come up with such a high volume of questions has meant I have to dig deep, and that’s when things tend to get interesting.

What is the best thing to eat for lunch? [pizza rolls.]

What is your favorite book?  [Diary of a Wimpy Kid]

Have you been good all year?  [No. But yes because I want a present.]

What is your favorite thing that is tiny? [My sister.]

What makes you really angry? [My sister.]

It’s very loosely structured- sometimes he answers with words, sometimes pictures, sometimes arrows and emojis.

My daughter is 4, so she gets a prompt- Draw a unicorn.  Draw a house you’d like to live in. Draw our family.

It’s been amazing to see how their brains work, and it’s bringing us closer in amazing ways.  They look forward to today’s pages and I look forward to reading them so much that it’s easily the best part of my day.
