My Favorite Networking Technique: It's Not What You Think!
If you're like me, you were amazingly awkward in high school. I hadn't grown into my fabulousness yet or figured out curly hair. And I shopped nearly exclusively at stores that were almost certainly catering to professional drag queens. (See: Beatnix, Boystown Chicago) Throw in being fluffy chubby and you've got yourself a real winner, folks. I think everyone has had that feeling in one way or another. (The GHOAT was prom king, so maybe not him 😂) And in my experience, a networking event where you don't know anyone can practically bring on trauma flashbacks. Here's how to use it to your advantage.
My absolute favorite networking technique is to look around the room and find out who is currently living their worst high school experience. Alone, in a corner, knowing no one. It’s a pretty universal experience I think! It’s like trying to find a table in the cafeteria all over again! Find the person who is currently wishing that they had never come to this stupid event and trying to mentally calculate how long until they can bail. Strike up a conversation with that person and you’ll make a friend for life! (And you’ll thank me later!)
