Salary Negotiation Rule #5 Wait to accept. (5/5)

Rocked the interview process and gotten yourself an offer that you’re really excited about? Great! Don’t accept it yet. Even if it’s the most incredible offer ever…make them wait.

When you get a job offer, most employers will expect you to take some time to consider the offer or counter it. It’s totally acceptable to ask for that time. So how do you ask?

Thank them for the opportunity. Then ask if there’s a deadline. If you’d like more time than they suggested, ask for it! Much like your salary, you won’t get time you don’t ask for. Make that request.

“Would it be OK if I let you know by Tuesday?” Give yourself as much time as you think you’ll need to consider the offer and come up with a counteroffer.

Whatever you do, don’t accept the offer the same day it’s presented. You may be internally jumping up and down. Play it cool. Take time to think about it. I promise you’ll come up with something to ask for, even if it’s just reimbursement for dry cleaning or additional flexibility.
