Salary Negotiation Rule #4 Money first. (4/5)

Although everything is negotiable – vacation time, health insurance, flexible schedules, working from home – you have to focus on the money first. Salaries are the heart of negotiations; that’s what they’re really all about.

Make sure you get a number you’re happy with before you start negotiating any other benefits to be included in the package.

You’re probably not really willing to forsake income for an extra week of vacation. Vacation time won’t put money in the bank. That’s money you’ll need to take that vacation.

It may be tempting to accept a lower salary in exchange for some other flashy benefits, but in the end, it’s a loss for you.

What could you do with an extra $10,000? Take a trip to Tuscany, renovate your master bathroom, or put it towards your retirement. You can’t do any of that with benefits alone.

Your salary is what allows you to live the life you want. Sure, added benefits are perks of the job, but they are a side dish and money is the entree. The money is what will provide the legacy you want to leave.
