Salary Negotiation Rule #1 Don't NEED a job. (1/5)

If you are in desperate need of a job, it’s going to be hard to negotiate. You’ll have a hard time saying
“I’m worth this much,” when you’re thinking, “I need this much.” Don’t go into a salary negotiation thinking about what you need. The employer doesn’t think about what you need, they think about what you’re worth to them. So should you.

What are your skills and experience worth to the company? That’s where you start. If you’re worried about paying your bills, it’s likely going to be difficult for you to ask for a higher salary. If you’re feeling more desperate than worthy, you’ll have difficulty showing the employer you deserve it.

If you don’t have a job right now, go get one that will pay the bills. Then you’ll have a safety net and that’s a great place to begin. Now go after the job you really want. And, if you don’t get selected for the role because some company doesn’t want to fork over the money to pay you what you’re worth, move on. You’re still doing just fine.
